Flat feet are a structural condition in which the natural arch of the foot is lowered or absent, causing the foot to rest flat on the ground. This can affect how weight is distributed across the foot and may lead to discomfort. While some individuals with flat feet experience no symptoms, others develop pain and instability. Understanding this condition helps individuals recognize when treatment may be needed.
Common symptoms include pain in the heel or arch that becomes more noticeable during or after activity. Many people experience pain that worsens with activity, particularly during walking or running. Swelling along the inside of the ankle may also occur, often due to strain on the tendons that support the arch. Additional symptoms may include stiffness, fatigue, and changes in walking pattern. These signs can interfere with daily activities if left untreated.
Flat feet can develop due to several causes, including inherited foot structure, injury, or gradual weakening of supportive tissues. Risk factors include obesity, prolonged standing, and wearing shoes that do not provide adequate support. Conditions such as arthritis or tendon dysfunction can also increase the likelihood of arch collapse. Understanding these contributing factors can help guide prevention and early intervention strategies.
Proper management focuses on supporting the arch and reducing strain on the foot. Supportive footwear, custom orthotics, and targeted exercises can help improve comfort and stability. Addressing symptoms early can prevent progression and reduce the risk of complications. Maintaining foot health is essential for overall mobility and well being. If you have flat feet that are causing discomfort, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for effective relief and management tips.

What Are Flat Feet?
Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.
Conditions & Problems:
Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.
Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.
Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.
Symptoms
- Pain around the heel or arch area
- Trouble standing on the tip toe
- Swelling around the inside of the ankle
- Flat look to one or both feet
- Having your shoes feel uneven when worn
Treatment
If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
