It is time for sandals again. Patients come into Dr. Kauffman office in York, PA this time of year for treatments for discolored toenails. Many of these nail color changes are from fungus. Treatments can be broken down into two groups. Topical treatments and oral treatment.
On the market there are hundreds of different over- the -counter treatments. Topical medication for nails fungus are approximately 10% to 50% effective. Many patients ask my opinion on Vick's Vapor Rub. It can work on a small area of nail infection but is not effective if the entire nail is involved. Why does it work? Menthol in the rub is a nature anti-fungal. Te-tree oil is an example of natural anti-fungal.
The market has even created nail polish with anti-fungal medication.
The oral medications such as Lamisil are approximately 70% effective. With Lamisil we check Liver Enzymes since the medication is metabolized by the liver.
