Post surgical incisions heal in the same physiological manner for all individuals. The question arises why do some patients develop hair thin scars and others thick "ugly scars'?
The reasons are patients genetics, suture type, suturing technique and motion at the incision.
There are several plastic surgical techniques that can be utilized to lessen scar formation. It is important to choose a suture with limited reaction properties and proper needle section.
One of the greatest risks factors that patients can lessen is motion at the surgical site. Motion can also be decreased by immobilization and the use of steri-strips (types of special surgical band-aids).
Patients that have a personal or family history of "ugly" scar need to discuss this with there surgeon.
