Dr. Jeffrey Kauffman at Premier Ankle & Foot Specialists PC in york, PA see patients daily with dry, cracked heels. Most patients do not address the skin issue until the heels become painful, bleed, or infected. Hydration to the skin is very important. It provides our only protection to the outside world.
Patient usually state that they tried every cream on the market. There are several prescription cream that will manage the issue. One of my favorite products is a urea based cream.
It is also very important to have the fissures or heel cracks debrided. These ridges of hyperkeratotic tissue (skin) cause a valley that splits as the "mountains" of skin on either side move up and down and put further stress on the areas.
Several patients have tried the "PedEgg" with some success. I do not recommend any individuals with poor eye sight, peripheral vascular disease, or neuropathy use such products.
